Sex was much on Pepys’s mind throughout his adult life, as was the attendant guilt and there many biographers have left the matter. Plenty of tidbits from those diaries make their way into this thorough, richly detailed portrait by English writer Tomalin ( Jane Austen: A Life, 1997, etc.): on one page we find Pepys (1633–1703) chasing after a servant girl and castigating himself for his success, on another recording a moment of sexual pleasure with which he graced his long-suffering wife-and then worrying whether she might “get a trick of liking it,” as no seemly woman should in those days. A sparkling, wonderfully readable biography of the English official less well known for his contributions to good government than for his salacious, achingly self-doubtful diaries. ![]() The Greens Cookbook by Deborah Madison6/10/2023 ![]() Local Flavors emphasizes seasonal, regional ingredients found in farmers’ markets and roadside farm stands and awakens the reader to the real joy of making a direct connection with the food we eat and the person who grows it. Don't make someone pregnant and then ignore all the consequences: since baby Charlie spends most of his time with Grace, we see pretty much no change in Isabel's life at all. and then we just skip about a year ahead, the baby is born, they're happily dating and Cat is fucking pissed. … ( more)Ī bit disappointed in this book, because I was kinda looking forward to seeing Isabel dealing with being pregnant, seeing how her relationship with Jamie develops and seeing Cat react to it. and soon finds herself diverging from her philosophical musings about fatherhood onto a path that leads her into the mysteries of the art world and the soul of an artist. ![]() ![]() Are these paintings forgeries? This proves to be sufficient fodder for Isabel's inquisitiveness. So, it was not a surprise to find that The Merlin Conspiracy was a very different book to Deep Secret with only a couple of characters, and almost no plot elements, in common. Far from carrying on a story in a new volume, or even providing more adventures for her previous protagonists, her sequels are usually told from the perspective of entirely different people, take place in different parts of the world, or even entirely different worlds, and have little or nothing to do with the plot of the previous book. Diana Wynne Jones has an odd way of writing sequels. ![]() Me talk pretty someday6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Elmo's Fire" star, Emilio Estevez, whose recently rereleased film "The Way" is set along the route. ![]() But as the two men - one nursing his first real heartbreak and the other retracing a journey he'd made a quarter of a century before - journey across Spain, they find a new way to relate to each other, one step at a time.Ĭoincidentally, the transformative power of the Camino de Santiago also gets an endorsement from another "St. But the man so synonymous with a certain '80s-era shorthand ( he named his last memoir "Brat") told me during a recent "Salon Talks" conversation that for him, the trek represented something uniquely precious - a chance to spend a few uninterrupted weeks with his 19-year-old son.Īs McCarthy writes in "Walking with Sam: A Father, a Son, and Five Hundred Miles Across Spain," forging an adult relationship with your newly grown-up kid ( "Dead to Me" actor Sam McCarthy) can be its own rough road.
